Item Details

Description

West Africa, Mali, Dogon peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic figure standing with delineated legs atop an integral rectangular platform. The slender figure exhibits a puffy waist, a peaked navel beneath protruding pectorals, and a wide neck surmounted by a spherical head. The minimalist countenance presents with only a horizontal mouth groove, and the entire figure is covered in dark brown pigment. Figures like this example are perhaps guardian figures meant to protect households from evil magic. Size: 1.05" W x 4.75" H (2.7 cm x 12.1 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.
