Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A superb textile panel with a body comprised of loosely woven natural cotton fibers in a gauze-like consistency colored with brown pigment. The periphery of the textile body is lined with striped red, pink, and yellow columns that terminate in frilled tassels and support trios of bridged fabric panels that alternate between sets of purple and green colors. Gauze panels like this example were typically used as burial wraps for deceased individuals. Mounted atop a museum-quality display fabric. Repairs to several areas of interior gauze threads, with modern sewing around repairs. Minor fraying and loosening to some interior and peripheral threads, with staining and fading to original color, and minor creasing. Nice remains of original colors throughout.
