PACIFIC WHALING SHIP'S MANIFEST
PACIFIC WHALING SHIP'S MANIFEST
Item Details
Description
A very rare partly printed manifest for a whaling ship called the 'Prudent' out of Stonington, Connecticut, 2pp. 11.5 x 15.75 in., 'Northwest Coast of Tahiti', [n.d.]. The ship was owned by a man named C.J. Williams and captained by Ellery Nash. An overview of the ship's contents reads, in part: '...one thousand fifty barrels polar oil, fifteen thousand whale bone, two hundred packages polar oil, fifteen packages sperm oil...piece of satin, one crate six aprons...two pieces silk...500 lbs bread, 2 barrels pork...' Verso unmarked. Moderately toned and creased, else fine condition. While undated, this manifest is from a voyage made by the Prudent to the North Pacific from 1853-55 as shown through a record of the trip in the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and an original journal written by a crew member which was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2015. The Prudent sailed through the Pacific making stops in Hawaii, Japan, China, and even reaching as far as the Okhotsk Sea. They hunted whales along the way and came into contact with several other ships. The Prudent visited Tahiti, where this manifest was written, on their return journey which took them around the Cape Horn and back to the Atlantic before finally returning to Stonington in mid-1855.
