This book, Americans in Japan, describes the first view of Lew Chew, explorations of Japanese islands and descriptions of inhabitants. Other topics include Japanese celebrations and rituals, natural phenomena encounters – volcanoes and earthquakes in Japan, and much more.



This 1857 edition of Robert Tomes account of Perrys voyage was the first and only edition of the work. Tomes was a member of Perrys expedition and his first-hand description is accompanied with fine illustrations throughout.
