1857 1st ed JAPAN Commodore Matthew Perry Expedition CHINA Illustrated ASIA
An important narrative of an American squadron sent to China Seas and Japan in 1852. Under Commodore Matthew C. Perry, this voyage lasted for two years, by order of the United States. This book, Americans in Japan, describes the first view of Lew Chew, explorations of Japanese islands and descriptions of inhabitants. Other topics include Japanese celebrations and rituals, natural phenomena encounters – volcanoes and earthquakes in Japan, and much more.
This 1857 edition of Robert Tomes account of Perrys voyage was the first and only edition of the work. Tomes was a member of Perrys expedition and his first-hand description is accompanied with fine illustrations throughout.
