Interpreted by artist Peter Van Dingstee, gyotaku is the Oriental art of creating prints of real fish on delicate rice paper. First practiced in the 1800s in Asia, gyotaku was a means of recording a commercial fisherman’s catch. Translated from Japanese, gyo means fish and taku is the stone rubbing process used to make the prints. Van Dingstee uses this historic art form and creates a variety of compositions, textures and colors in a modern adaptation.
