The family originally hailed from Hunstanton in the County of Norfolk in the East Anglia of England. During the 16th Century some of the family settled in Ireland either on an appointment from the Crown or perhaps as adventurers. Over the generations they became well established members of the Anglo-Irish gentry. There were branches located in the Counties of Roscommon, Westmeath, Kings County and Queens County and elsewhere in Ireland.
