Item Details
Description
Lucio Pozzi (Italian-born American, b. 1935). "Volo Decorativo" ("Decorative Flight" or "Fanciful Flight") acrylic on canvas painting, 1968. Signed, dated, and titled on the verso. A striking abstract painting by Lucio Pozzi. The long rectangular composition brings together Pop Art and color field painting with stylized pink and orange biomorphic shapes set against a saturated royal blue ground that brings to mind International Klein Blue, an intense shade of blue first mixed by the French artist Yves Klein ca. 1958. Klein was inspired by such natural elements as the sea and sky as well as the sublime expanse of the universe. "Fanciful Flight" is a magnificent painting in which Pozzi brings his bold yet elegant design to the canvas but also alludes to a visual metaphor for flight, as soaring thoughts and ideas "take off" into the world. Size: 12" L x 38" W (30.5 cm x 96.5 cm) Size of frame: 13" L x 39" W (33 cm x 99.1 cm)

Born in Milan, Italy, Lucio Pozzi studied architecture in Rome and moved to New York City in 1962. Pozzi is currently based in Hudson, New York and Valeggio sul Mincio, Verona, Italy. Pozzi's works can be found in the following permanent collections: New Mexico Museum of Art, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center; the Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Art Gallery of Ontario; the New York Public Library; the Detroit Institute of Arts; Giuseppe Panza; the Fogg Art Museum; the Herbert and Dorothy Vogel Collection and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His honors include an award from the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1983); a Master Honoris Causa from the Accademia di Verona, Italy (2010); Premio Ciampi L'altrarte (2015); and Premio Lissone Career Prize (2018). His work was also presented at the Venice Biennale (American Pavilion) in 1980 and Documenta 6 (1977). In addition, Pozzi has taught art at Cooper Union, the Yale Graduate Sculpture Program, Princeton University, the School of Visual Arts in New York, and the Maryland Institute of Art.
