Item Details
Description
This is a beautiful Staffordshire figure/spill vase titled "The Rival" to the base. The figure is circa 1850

This is a large figural group. It stands 15" tall and it is 8 1/4" by 3 1/2" at the base.
It depicts a scene from the play "The Rivals" by Richard Brinsley Butler Sheridan that was first
performed at Covent Garden Theatre on 17 January 1775. The play is now considered to be one of Sheridan's masterpieces
It shows a couple on a bench and a rival with a dagger on the tree behind them. The spill vase is had colored in cobalt blue and multi-color.
The figure is in good condition - it has no chips and cracks.
There is some crazing that is normal for those figurines, as well as, some gold loss - please refer to the pictures.

Staffordshire figures and animals were made by many different potters and factories and were rarely signed.
English pottery figural groups were made during the latter part of the 18th Century.
They were potted from simple two-piece press molds. Once dry, the molds were placed together and thin rolls of clay were inserted to seal the seams inside.
The next step was to make a small hole, usually on the base, so that air was able to escape during the firing process.
After the first firing, the figures were painted with underglaze colors and then dipped into a liquid glaze.
Once this process was completed, the figures were then painted with enamel, overglaze, colors and any gilding required and then fired a final time.
Due to the deposits of clay left in the molds, the average mold's life would not last for more than 100 figures without severe loss of quality.
This is one way to tell the age of the figure, the cleaner and crisper, the earlier it was produced in the mold's life. The more often the mold was used, the less the quality of the figure produced.
