BIOGRAPHY:
Charles Demetropoulos was born in Lowell, MA in 1912 and died while residing at the Fenway Studios on Ipswich Street in Boston, MA in 1976. While attending the Bartlett School grades 1 through 9 in the Acre section of Lowell, young Charles was encouraged by his art teacher, Miss Helene Abels, to further develop his talent. After finishing his studies at Lowell High School, with Miss Abels advice and support, he went on to the Massachusetts College of Art where he subsequently taught for many years. He also attended Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, MI.Known as "Mr. Copley Square", Demetropoulos is mainly remembered for his Boston watercolors depicting garden scenes, churches, trolleys, cars, and trains in and around Copley Square. He was a very prolific painter and, according to those who knew him, produced a minimum of one or two paintings each day.A quick, loose watercolor technique was Demetropoulos' mature style but his early oils were very academic; his portraits are on a par with the work of many of the late 19th and early 20th century Boston artists.Portraits of his mother and father, on display at the Whistler House Museum in Lowell, are two fine examples of figures that seem to breathe as their eyes penetrate viewer.
