BIOGRAPHY:
A painter, especially known for Chicago scenes, Richard Chase recreated the urban environment of that city including skyscrapers, bridges and industrial scenes in a manner that showed a city full of energy and future promise. One of his works, "The Palmolive Building" (Chicago Historical Society) depicted a structure built in the late 1920s. Chase showcased it in a night scene with the building as a lighted beacon exuding radiance and dominance at the end of Michigan Avenue where for many years it was the tallest building. For Chicago's 1933 Century of Progress Exposition, intended to counter the pessimism from the Depression, Chase was selected as an illustrator and muralist. He also painted richly colored landscapes and still lifes.Chase was born in Columbus, Kansas, and from 1919 to 1925, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where he moved in 1918 and lived until 1981, four years before he died in his hometown.
