Exhibition history: Heritage Gallery, Los Angeles (CA), 1986, Museum of Modern Art loan EL. 1977.515. Michael Kanin was an American director, producer, playwright and screenwriter who shared an Academy Award with Ring Lardner Jr. for writing the Katharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy film comedy Woman of the Year (1942). Kanin returned to fine art in his later years creating bronze sculptures of many entertainers including Louis Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin and Groucho Marx. This is the first work by Kanin to come up for public auction.
