Civil War 1862 Signed Oath and Military Pass
CIVIL WAR. Partially Printed Document Signed, “John Haley”, 1p, on ruled paper, 5.5” x 4”, Murfreesboro, September 2, 1862. Flattened folds, unevenly cut edges, toning, else near Fine.
A ten day Military Pass issued to soldier John Haley on the verso of an Oath of Allegiance whereby Haley, age 46, described as 5’9” tall with blue eyes and grey hair, swears, “without any mental reservation or evasion, that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the laws made in pursuance thereof, that I will not take up arms against the United States, or give aid or comfort or furnish information directly or indirectly, to any person or persons belonging to any of the so-styled Confederate States, who are now, or may be in rebellion against the Government of the United States…It is understood that the penalty for the violation of this Pass is death.” Captain William H. Mills, as Provost Marshall, signs on both sides of the document.
