Description

Three Ambrotypes of Young Women, Ca. mid-1800s, All Varying Sizes

A group of three fantastic mid-19th century ambrotypes of young women, excellent for any photography enthusiast. Includes three various sized images, as follows:

Sixteenth Plate, measuring 1.375" x 1.625", No place, undated. A portrait of a seated teenage girl, whose cheeks have been tinted with a flattering pink blush. Housed in a thermoplastic case.

Ninth Plate, measuring 2" x 2.5", No place, undated. An image of two young women, perhaps sisters, one seated and the other standing behind her. Housed in a cloth-covered wooden case.

Sixth Plate, measuring 2.75" x 3.25", No place, undated. An image of a young woman, seated in a casual pose with her arm resting on a small table. She is well dressed with fine jewelry, tinted gold after the photograph was developed. Housed in a cloth-covered wooden case.

Wear to all three cases, with the front cover of the ninth plate having become separated. The sixth plate image of the young woman has spotting and imperfections throughout. Overall the group is good.

Ambrotypes, patented in 1854, were created through a process that produced a negative image that became visible when the glass was backed by black material. For an ambrotype, the dark areas remain dark when held at an angle, distinguishing them from daguerreotypes.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
