Bell Telephone Co subscriber set, consisting of manual switch "coffin" style magneto ringer box. Ca 1877-1878; wall magnetic transmitter, Ca. 1877-1878, and wooden hand telephone receiver, Ca. late 1870s through 1880s. Ringer box and transmitter manufactured by Charles Williams, Jr., Boston, Massachusetts. Ringer box marked on front lighting arrestor "Made for / Bell Telephone Co." and "Manuf'd by / Charles Williams Jr. / Boston" Binding posts are marked "(?) / 3"; on top right "1 / L"; and "T" between each of the two lower sets. Transmitter marked on front, top, "Property of / Bell Telephone Co. / Patented Mar. 7, '76 / Jan 30 '77; receiver unmarked and would appear not to be a Williams's manufactured or Bell piece. Condition: Overall excellent with the exception of scratching and surface wear consistent with age, especially on the ringer box. Ringer box presents appearance of completeness of all original components on the outside, including lightening arrestor pin, with the possible exception of one of the gong nuts; magneto crank turns but internal components not otherwise tested or examined. Ringer box has period "rattlesnake" receiver cord Transmitter element is complete and in excellent condition; no opinion, however, is offered as to originality of all internal components and mouthpiece. Except for the receiver, a singularly rare assemblage of the earliest Bell components. From the Howard Hazelcorn collection.
