Description
Mughal / Indo - Persian miniature painting of a courtly lady. India, ca. 18th - 19th century. Watercolor and ink on paper. Painting depicts a courtly lady, perhaps a princess or queen, laying on her outdoor bed, being served by her four attendants. All are heavily ornamented. The palace is shown in perspective, with floral tilework and various utensils, such as ewers. Painting is surrounded by writing in the Persian script, and seems to go on outside of the matted area centered in frame. Painting has incredible detail, and is a high quality miniature. Painting measures 6 1/2" tall by 4" wide (opening). Framed in gilt frame behind glass. Frame measures 14 3/8" tall by 11 7/8" wide by 15/16" deep. Painting has some condition problems, with worm holes throughout. Colors are, however, very bright, and the holes do not detract from the aesthetic beauty and tehnical mastery of this painting. Keywords: Asia, Asian, Indian, Persia, Islam, Islamic, Muslim, art, artist, fancy, decor, precious, manuscript, Farsi, Urdu, royal, imperial
