Published African Temne Head Crest, Sierra Leone, C. Mid 20th C. A very large carved wood festival headpiece composed of a large crowned Hindu female face with tranquil expression, bold features and a bindi dot (to protect against evil); her upturned braids supporting two kneeling female figures, who together hold a detachable pounder and a tray for preparing grain. This elaborate carving was created for masquerade celebrations by the Ode-Lay society.
