President “James Monroe” Signed Document With Vignette
JAMES MONROE (1758-1831). 5th President of the United States. During the War of 1812, Monroe held the critical roles of both Secretary of State and the Secretary of War under President James Madison.
March 25, 1818-Dated, Partly-Printed Document Signed, “James Monroe” as President, upon Vellum, Washington, measuring 10” x 13.5” with Vignette, Very Fine. This pleasing original Document Granting 160 acres in Illinois to Thomas Nixon, “late a Corporal in Biddle’s company of the Corps of Artillery.” Countersigned by Land Commissioner Josiah Meigs. At top left is an allegorical vignette of “Columbia and Liberty” granting a deed to a veteran soldier, whose young son holds his military sword. Normal folds with light overall tone and a few ink black spots at lower right bottom edges (which could easily be covered by matting and framing). The official Paper and Wax Embossed Seal is fully intact at the lower left, plus it has its original tied paper slip insert under the Seal, advertising the sale of a map of Illinois Territory for one dollar. James Monroe’s signature has a vertical fold between his name being boldly signed in dark brown at lower right. This Vellum form with both the Ornate Vignette and Seal Tag intact are quite scarce and more desirable.
