Description
Large ceramic vase, constructed using the traditional Native American technique called slab-paddling, featuring textured surface, etched neck, and wooden handles, signed Jack Moulthrop (20th C., American)
23"h x 18"d
Jack Moulthrop was a 20th century artist whose early work largely took inspiration from pre-Columbian art, namely from Mesoamerica, Andean, and southwest cultures. This work in particular draws from all three. The repeating cruciform is a reference to a Chakan, otherwise known as an Incan Cross. The etched maize plants are typical of Mesoamerican art, while the color palette is reminiscent of the southwest.
