John Stobart is considered the greatest contemporary maritime artist. Born in Derby, England, he now lives in St. Augustine, Florida. His passion for detailed depictions of grand sailing ships and vessels was inspired by a voyage by sea from England to South Africa in the early 1950s.

This painting is among Stobart's earlier works.
