South Asia, eastern India, Bengal, Chandraketugarh, ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE. A charming pottery head featuring a naturalistic visage with generously lidded, almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils, a straight nose with broad nostrils, a petite, bow-lipped smile, held slightly parted, and a pointed chin. A headband or headdress crowns the ancient visage. The verso is flat, as though the figure was part of a relief. Size: 3.5" W x 5.3" H (8.9 cm x 13.5 cm); 7.5" H (19 cm) on included custom stand.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available for $50 to the buyer. Please contact us to request.

Fragment of a larger piece. Expected chips, nicks, abrasions, and pitting, all commensurate with age. Areas of fire darkening. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits. TL holes to top of verso and underside of chin.
