Central Asia, north Indian subcontinent, Gandhara, ca. 300 BCE. A delightful terracotta relief of the head of a man, perhaps a prince, presenting an expressive countenance with an incised unibrow, huge, generously lidded eyes with delineated pupils, a round nose, full cheeks, a dimpled chin, and fleshy lips held in a warm smile. A jeweled tiara crowns his head, balancing a top a thick coiffure of coiled tresses. Size: 3.2" W x 3.6" H (8.1 cm x 9.1 cm); 5.3" H (13.5 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.

Fragment of a larger piece. Losses to headdress, nose, proper left side of coiffure, and right ear. Some chipping, nicks, and abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with impressive remaining details and light earthen deposits.
