Description
VICTORIAN PARLOR DIORAMA, having paper-covered walls with decorative brass tack edging and wool carpet, having various furniture and furnishings, including an eight-piece upholstered seating of a settee, two armchairs, four side chairs, and a footstool, a large wall mirror with base, a fireplace mantle, ceramic figures, and a china-head doll with cloth body featuring china hands and feet. Possibly originated in Mid-Atlantic region. Mid 19th century. 14 1/4" H, 26 1/4" W, 16 1/4" D.
Published: Diorama and some furniture/furnishings in Lakin - Folk Art For Children: Handmade in America 1760-1940, p. 259-261, F5.28, 30, and 31.
Provenance: The Eleanor V. Lakin Collection, Boonsboro, MD.
Purchased from a Pennsylvania dealer at an outdoor market in Gettysburg, PA.
Exhibited: "Valley of the Shadow" Civil War exhibit, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, 2013.
Condition
Good to very good overall condition with expected wear and other imperfections; paper with tears, small losses, and discoloration, carpet with losses; seating set with worn spots and shattering to upholstery; possible old repairs; doll with loss of one foot.
