Description
Portrait 17th-C. Style Dutch Man, Signed A.P.T. De Haas. Alice Preble Tucker De Haas, also known as Alice DeHaas or Alice Preble De Haas (later Alice Carpender) was a student of noted Dutch-American painter Maurits De Haas, who she later married. This portrait depicats an unidentified mustached man in traditional 17th-C. Dutch atttire of cavalier hat and white ruff. His face resembles Isaac Abrahamszoon Massa as painted by Frans Hals, or a young Nicolaes Ruts, as painted by Rembrandt. Though the date of 1912 suggests De Haas was depicting an imagined historical figure or somebody dressed as one, wearing also an expression of lofty pride.
