Description
Rene Exume (Haiti, b. 1929) Large Charcoal Man Chickens. René Exumé / Rene Exume (Haiti, 1929-2016) was a notable Haitian artist who joined the Centre d'Art in 1948, where he worked under Cedor and was influenced by North American painter W. Woldrock. He became a founding member of the breakaway group that left the Centre'd'Art in 1950 to establish the Foyer des Artes Plastiques. His works, which were not distributed by gallerists during his lifetime and are not widely available, often depict slum life, rural scenes, and Voodoo rites. This piece, which appears to be done in charcoal and pastel, shows a man bending over to feed two roosters while a figure in the background appears to call out. Signed and dated 1958 by the artist at lower right, and recently re-framed with notes on provenance on reverse.
