Item Details
Description
Josef Albers 1972 Screen Print Diptych from Formulation : Articulation. Portfolio I Folder 24. From an edition of 1000 produced by Harry N. Abrams Inc. and Ives-Sillman Inc.It includes the piece in its entirety as opposed to a single page cut in half as is often the case. Formulation : Articulation is a portfolio composed of silkscreen prints published by Harry N. Abrams and printed by the well known fine art printing firm Ives- Sillman. This double portfolio work provides the most comprehensive overview of Albers revolutionary color and geometric designs. Josef Albers is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He was born in 1888 in Bottrop, Germany. In 1920 Albers joined the Bauhaus movement in Weimar that focused on the modern integration of architecture, fine art, and craft. Albers became a well-known art teacher and professor both in Europe and the United States. When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925, he taught alongside Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. After the Nazis forced the Bauhaus to close in 1933, Albers and his wife, Anni Albers, moved to North Carolina where he became head of the Art Department of Black Mountain College from 1933 until 1949. Albers left Black Mountain to head the Department of Design at Yale University. His students included Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Eva Hesse, and John Chamberlain. Josef Albers was a prolific printmaker and painter. His most important works on paper include Homage to the Square, Formulation: Articulation, and Interaction of Color.
