Description
(Japanese, 1891-1929) oil on canvas, signed and dated July 1921, together with a watercolor copy of the portrait made in March 1968 and a biographic book about the professor, 'Kondo Tsugishige Sensei Seidan Hyakumen Kinenkai', 3 pieces total. Kondo Tsugishige (1866-1944) was a medical scientist and the co-founder of the Japan Surgical Society. Kishida painted two portraits of Kondo for the family in 1921. One was destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 1923, and the family asked Kishida to make another to replace it. The painting offered here is the remaining original first portrait from 1921, which has remained in the Kondo family until this year. It has never been offered to the public before. The 1925 copy by Kishida is the one held at the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hamaya.
