Description
An Edwardian sterling silver gilt three-piece café au lait set, London 1909 by Stewart Dawson & Co Ltd Comprising a coffee pot, a hot milk pot and a twin handled sugar bowl. The pots of tall, rounded form upon domed bases, with hinged domed lids surmounted by ball finials, ebonised handled pinned to scroll junctions. The coffee pot with a fluted shell capped spout. Each engraved with a crest of an eagle with wings expanded, each wing charged with a fasces erect, supporting with the dexter claw an escutcheon of the arms, viz., per pale az and sa., on a fesse invected, plain cottised or, between three fleurs-de-lis of the last, a fasces erect between two eagles' heads erased, all above the motto Virtute et labore. Each fully marked. (3) Coffee pot height – 20 cm / 7.95 inches Weight – 1023 grams / 32.89 ozt The crest and motto are for Whitehead For Sir James Whitehead, 1st Baronet (1834 - 1917) of Highfield House, Catford Bridge, Kent, created a baronet on 26th November 1889. He married Mercy Matilda Hinds (1840-1911) on the 30th November 1860. (thence by descent)
