Kate White Newhall (1840-1917) American, Seascape after Wm Trost Richards, San Francisco Marine Painter.Newhall studied at Cooper Union in New York from 1863 to 1864, taking a certificate for "Drawing and Painting from Still Life." She also took classes from Carleton Wiggins, Rufus Wright and Mauritz F.H. de Haas. In California, her art interest turned to depictions of marine scenes and sunsets, and she supported herself the remainder of her life with her art. Most of her subjects came from the Bay Area and her forte was coastla scenes with waves crashing against rocks. She she also painted in Monterey, Santa Barbara and at Lake Tahoe. Exhibition venues included the Brooklyn Art Association, San Francisco Art Association, National Academy of Design, and the Art Association of Berkeley.Overall Size: 14 3/4 x 20 1/2 in.Sight Size: 17 1/2 x 13 1/4 in.
