Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An intriguing redware pottery vessel of an unusual form with anthropomorphic features protruding from a cylindrical vessel body. Highly burnished and covered in a lustrous shade of red, the balanced figure presents with bent legs atop a slightly rounded but stable base and holds both arms out from flush shoulders as if telling an entertaining tale. The head rests atop a squat neck and bears diamond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, parted lips, and ornamented ears, all beneath a broad cap shaped like an inverted canoe. Behind the head is an ovoid opening that leads to the interior of the vessel body. Size: 5.5" W x 7.4" H (14 cm x 18.8 cm)

Restoration to verso of head along proper right side to middle of back rim as well as along right half of protruding headdress rim, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light encrustations, with fading to red pigment in scattered areas, and a few small spalls. Nice remains of red pigment and good manganese deposits throughout.
