Description
Japanese stoneware charger plate / bowl, 1960, wax resist decoration, persimmon glaze. Mashiko pottery in the style of Hamada, ca.1960 unknown craftsman, "mingei" school mashiko pottery. Provenance: From the estate of Daniel Rhodes, Alfred University. Property from an Indianapolis collector. Hamada was a Japanese potter. He had a significant influence on studio pottery of the twentieth century, and a major figure of the mingei (folk-art) movement, establishing the town of Mashiko as a world-renowned pottery centre. In 1955 he was designated a "Living National Treasure".Dimensions: 12 1/4"diam.
