Item Details
Description
Cypro-Archaic Period, ca. 600 to 480 BCE. A delightful pottery sculpture of a horse and rider enveloped in a creamy beige slip. Boasting a minimalist form, the noble steed stands atop 4 sturdy legs, displaying a slender flank and long, thick neck that curves to a pointed snout. Round ears flank the animal's short mane that projects in a horn-like manner at the front, while a brief tail extends from its posterior. The petite rider faces forward presenting an abstract visage dominated by a huge nose and spiked coiffure or headdress. His stocky body exhibits squat legs, broad shoulders, and bulky arms that rest on the horse's neck. Size: 4.5" L x 1.5" W x 4.8" H (11.4 cm x 3.8 cm x 12.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private prominent D.K. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s
