Description
For your consideration are a lot of (4) items relating to and in the style of Walter Inglis Anderson and Shearwater Pottery. The first offering is a large three dimensional art pottery tile signed "Shearwater". This tile measures 6 3/4" square and is a colorful depiction of a fish. Under the "Shearwater" signature on the reverse of the tile is a date or model number but it is difficult to decipher. The tile weighs 1 pound, 8.6 ounces. The second offering is a beautiful hand-thrown Shearwater vase. The ribbed form has a nice grayish-blue low shine glaze that allows the underlying red clay to peek through. The underside of the vase carries the circular "Shearwater JA 98" marking denoting the vase was made by James Anderson (son of Peter Anderson - Walter Anderson's older brother). The vase measures 5 1/2" in height and weighs 8.7 ounces. The third piece being offered in this lot is a hand-colored framed card from Walter Anderson's gallery. This vibrant and highly stylized image is entitled "Crabing" and depicts a man perilously hanging over the edge of a pier to bring in a large blue crab. The back of the card is marked with Walter Inglis Anderson's monogram "WI". The image (as seen) measures 6 5/8" x 4 1/2" with the frame measuring 11" x 9". The final offering is a Shearwater style figural pottery vase of a tuba player. Reminiscent of Shearwater's pottery musician figures, this whimsical figure's tuba serves as a vase. The figure measures 4 7/8" in height, is 6" wide and 3" in depth with no noted markings. This figural vase weighs 15.2 ounces.
