BIOGRAPHY:
Franz Seraph Von Lenbach returned from Italy in 1866 and focused on portrait painting. Lenbach initially had to struggle with a poor order situation in Munich. However, this changed after the founding of the German Empire in 1871 and the associated emergence of a rich bourgeoisie that vied with the nobility. Franz Lenbach, who was not knighted until 1882 and was allowed to call himself "von Lenbach" from then on, became Germany's most sought-after portrait painter. The painting skills of Franz Von Lenbach were not undiscovered by the German imperial family either, and so in 1879 he portrayed Imperial Chancellor Otto FГјrst von Bismarck for the National Gallery in Berlin on behalf of Kaiser Wilhelm I. It was Lenbach's first portrait of the statesman and by Bismarck's death in 1898. More than 60 other portraits were to follow. Being a chancellor painter brought Lenbach quite a bit of prestige and dozens of other commissions. His numerous Bismarck portraits, which were created for both public and private clients, and their reproductions fueled Bismarck's popularity and had a lasting impact on the public's perception of the popular Chancellor. Even though Lenbach was granted the privilege of visiting the Chancellor personally at his country estate in Friedrichsruh and being able to portray him there, Bismarck was reluctant to sit as a model, and so many of his portraits were only created in Lenbach's studio from photographs and sketches.
