ARTIST STATEMENT

At first glance my work might appear fairly abstract. Closer inspection reveals glimpses, fragments, or passages of potentially more recognizable shapes. Using traditional mediums such as paint, printmaking and collage with the contemporary medium of digitally generated images, my works are based on my research into perception, deception, secrets, code, and camouflage, both visually and conceptually. My paintings, prints and collages hold no allegiance to strictly representation or abstraction, but reflect my curiosity in how both kinds of images express how we cope using strategies of duplicity. I’m a forager of visual information that serves my fascination with deception in human and animal behavior. I particularly like the patterns and designs found in nature that most species have adopted for sustaining existence in a predatory world. From zebra stripes and leopard spots to the surface markings found on sea creatures, reptiles, insects, and vegetation, each has its unique strategy for survival. I’m not interested in Illustrating my ideas or being literal. I like the open possibilities of ambiguity. I prefer poetry to prose in my images. That way each viewer gets to be involved in the interpretation. I like that every individual can make one of my pieces their own.
