Description
South Coast Decadent Wari Textile Fragment. Rare technique of false tapestry wherein a supplemental colored alpaca weft forms the figural work on top of a brown cotton ground fabric. Striping is pieced in place as is often done in Nazca area Wari textiles. Colors of the profile anthropomorphic bird headed figures is oriented on the sacred diagonal, a mid to North coastal textile design requirement. The processional figures hold an object before them, perhaps a Quero. This could be the seam area at the corner of a garment. Mounted on a fabric-lined board Size: 11'' x 10.5'', 28 x 27 cm (textile); 17'' x 17'', 43 x 43 cm (stretcher). Ex. Cathryn Cootner Estate Collection, Sonoma, CA.
