Description
"Museum of Antiquity. A description of Ancient Life, the Employments, Amusements, Customs and Habits of 3,000 years Ago", by L.W. Yaggy and T.L. Haines [Thomas Louis Haines 1844-1928]; published by Eastern Publishing House in 1883; illustrated with approximately 175 woodcuts and seven steel engraved plates by Illman Brothers.

Hard boards, original black and gold decorated cloth, [some wear, especially gold: see photos], 6.1/2" x 9.1/2", decorated endpapers [creased at the hinges]; "August 20, 1883" and "Ada L. Fisk" is pen-written on the first blank page; 944 pages, illustrated with c. 175 full page and text woodcut illustrations, 7 steel engravings with tissue guards, marbled page edges, very good condition.

Illman Brothers was an American engraving and printing company in Philadelphia, active as a firm 1860 and still in existence in 1907. The firm included Edward, George, Henry, and William Illman. Charles T. Illman, born about 1842, joined his brothers in the firm after 1860. They are best known for the monthly "Mode Parisienne" hand colored engraved plates for the fashion magazines. They also created numerous steel and copper engraved plates for the American, mainly Philadelphia located publishers. [Sources: G&W; Phila. CD 1860+; Stauffer]

Levi Walter Yaggy (1848-1912). Upon completing the course at the old Northwestern College at Naperville, Illinois, L.W. Yaggy went to Chicago, where he became engaged in the publishing business and for twenty-five years was one of the best-known publishers in the United States. He was president and chief stockholder in the Great Western Publishing House, which had seventeen branch offices and five thousand agents throughout the United States, the principle work of which was the publication of maps and studies for colleges and high schools, that the company for years having occupied a foremost position in that particular branch of the publishing business in this country. Mr. Yaggy was also quite a mechanical genius and was the patentee of numerous devices of a convenient sort, the first of which was a stubble turner, which yielded him considerable revenue. He also patented an adding machine, advertising devices of different types, a "royal scroll" for the display of pictures, and a Chautauqua desk. For this notable service of preparing a relief map of the United States for the use of the Smithsonian Institute at Washington Mr. Yaggy was created a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of England and was widely known in general geographic circles.
