Description
Buffalo Bill's Wild West: Historical Sketches and Daily Review, 3 Programs

A group of three fantastic programs for "Buffalo Bill's Wild West: Historical sketches and Daily Review" show. All measuring 7.25" x 9.5", unpaginated. Cincinnati, OH: Strobridge Lithography Company, 1907. Wraps are creased, with chipping on edges and nearly detached from the stapled binding, interior is lightly toned at edges with only minor soiling. The colors remain bright. Overall very good.

Colorful wraps depict Cody astride a horse in full regalia. Inside are short articles on the history and characters of America's westward expansion, along with many advertisements throughout (predominantly for businesses in New York).

The three copies differ in their editions and dates advertised for shows. The first lists Auburn, New York: July 30, 1908. No edition listed. The second lists Ottawa, Illinois: August 6, 1907, and Peoria, Illinois: August 8, 1907. Tenth Edition. And the last copy lists Syracuse, New York: July 11, 1907, and Rochester, New York: July 12, 1907. Ninth Edition.

William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody opened his Wild West show in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1883. Cody drew upon his real-life adventures, turning them into heightened spectacles for the public. The open-air shows depicted cowboys, Native Americans, army scouts, outlaws, and wild beasts, with most sketches being sensationalized. Native Americans were portrayed in a particular exploitative manner, while the rival cowboys and their lives on the American frontier were romanticized. Cody toured around the U.S. as well as Europe, even performing for Queen Victoria during her Golden Jubilee. The show hit its peak in 1893 but continued to run until 1913 when it was declared bankrupt.
