Winfield Scott ALS Politely Declining a Military Ball Invitation
1p, measuring 7.5" x 8.5", Philadelphia, dated January 16, 1844. An autograph letter signed "Winfield Scott" and addressed to Captain Fritz, Lieut. Sarmiento, Lieut. T.S. Herring, and Surgeon T.C. Bunting. Winfield Scott (1786-1866) forged a formidable reputation as a military commander, having seen action in the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. Due to his strict adherence to military etiquette, he gained the nickname "Old Fuss and Feathers." In 1852, Scott became the Whig Party's presidential nominee, but was defeated by Franklin Pierce.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
