M.L. Booth. "History of the City of New York", Illustrated. New York: 1860. Volume 16 of 20. Small quarto, unpaginated. Over 120 engravings, illustrations, and plates of Views of New York. Half calf red leather binding with marbled endpapers. "C.B. Farwell" bookplate adhered to the front pastedown. Light wear and discoloration to the spine and corners, overall very fine.

Mary Louise Booth (1831-1889) was an American writer and first editor-in-chief of "Harper's Bazaar". She moved to New York at the age of 18 and supported herself by working as a vest-maker by day and writing by night. Early in her career, she wrote numerous short stories for newspapers and magazines as well as translated foreign works for the public. The first edition of her "History of the City of New York" appeared in 1859, and launched her career as a writer.
