George Meade Signed Note During the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign
1p, measuring 3" x 2.5", No place, dated October 10, 1864. A short note from the U.S. Army of the Potomac, signed "Geo. G. Meade." Written in another hand, the note reads, "Respectfully forwarded for the action of the War Department", with Meade's endorsement. Mounted to a small card, measuring 4" x 3.25" overall. Minor edge soiling and a slight amount of smudging to "Meade" in the signature. Boldly signed otherwise.
General George Gordon Meade (1815-1872) assumed control of the Army of the Potomac just three days prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, arriving on the field after the first day's action. His victory against Lee's invasion of the North helped shift the tide of the war and likely saved the union. At the time this note was written, Meade was in the midst of leading the Army of the Potomac in the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign, along with Ulysses S. Grant.
