African American Hand Stitched Needlepoint Banner “We’s Free” Ca. 1865
This iconic piece of needlework measures 14” x 17” and was likely created by freed slaves to commemorate being released from bondage. A hand-stitched banner depicting an African American couple dressed in red, holding hands and dancing with the caption below reading "We's Free". The piece has a stitched red chain-link border with vine and floral design at lower margin, fringe at top. Provenance: Eldred’s Auction House, August 1, 2014, sold for $510.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
