1p, [7.25” x 7.25”] Single Page, third person ALS James Madison, Montpelier, VA, dated August 11, 1828 with endorsed integral address leaf which is addressed to John McLean, the Postmaster General and future Supreme Court Justice. Boldly signed “J Madison”, within the letter. With evidence of prior mounting, scattered foxing, and a slight tear from the seal.
The letter reads:
“J Madison presents his respects to Mr. McLean and takes the liberty of enclosing to his care a letter which he was requested to do by the gentlemen to whom it is addressed.
Montpelier Aug. 11. 1828"
John McLean was an American jurist and politician who served as U.S. Postmaster General, and as a justice of the Ohio and U.S. Supreme Courts. Most notably, McLean was one of two justices to dissent in the landmark case of Dred Scott v. Sandford.
