Daniel Webster Signed Receipt of Quarterly Salary

1p, measuring 6.5" x 3.375", Washington, D.C., dated October 31, 1850. A payment document signed "Danl. Webster", recording the receipt of $500 "from Wm C. Zantzinger, Agent of the Department of State…salary for the Quarter ending 31st December 1850." With uneven toning. A small tear at the lower left has been professionally repaired. Boldly signed.

Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was one of the most prominent lawyers of the 19th century and a statesman, who served as Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. Between 1814 and 1852 he argued over 200 cases before the Supreme Court.
