Anglo-Zulu War interest: a 19th century South African silver-plated and ivory presentation trowel
J Pardy, Durban circa 1883
With turned ivory handle monogrammed 'HEB' for Sir Henry Ernest Bulwer, the Lieutenant-Governor of Natal during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, the blade inscribed 'Presented to his Excellency Sir H E Bulwer KCMG Governor on his laying the foundation stone of the Town Hall, Durban, South Africa, Feb 1st 1883', the coat of arms and motto for Durban above, with 'Borough of Durban, Colony of Natal South Africa - Incorporated 1854' circling the image, and to the rear 'E Pickering, Mayor', length 33cm.

Sir Henry Ernest Gascoyne Bulwer, CMG (1864) KCMG (1874) GCMG (1883), was born on the 11 December 1836. He was educated at Charterhouse, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Sir Bulwer was Official Resident in the Ionian Islands under the Lord High Commissioner (1860-1864); Private Secretary to his uncle, the Ambassador at Constantinople (1865), and Receiver-General of Trinidad (1866). He administered the Government of Dominica (1867-1869) and was Governor of Labuan and Consular-General in Borneo (1871-1875); Lieutenant-Governor of Natal (1875-1880); Governor of Natal and Special Commissioner for Zulu Affairs (1882-1885) and High Commissioner in Cyprus (1886-1892). Bulwer died on the 30 September 1914.
