1862 Civil War Soldier PROVENANCE 1ed Adjutant Frazar Stearns Emily Dickinson
Frazar Augustus Stearns was a Union Army soldier in the American Civil War who died in the Battle of New Bern. The death of Frazar troubled his father William so much that he published a book memorializing the life of his son under the title Adjutant Stearns. Frazar was a student at Amherst College and a friend of Emily Dickinson and her family.
Note that this example is faintly signed by a William Crockett, 33rd Regiment of Massachusetts – a Civil War soldier.

William Crockett Jr. (d. 1863) was a corporal in Company E of the 33rd Massachusetts volunteer infantry during the Civil War. The unit was organized at Springfield, Massachusetts and mustered in for a three-year enlistment on August 6, 1862 under the command of Colonel Adin B. Underwood. Records indicate he was killed in the Battle of Wauhatchie, TN in October 1863.
