In the late 1860s, Harrison Bird Brown embarked on a summer sketching tour to Rumford Point, Maine, located in the foothills of the White Mountains near the New Hampshire border. Pictured at the right of Brown's painting, Rumford Point sits on the north bank of the Androscoggin River, across from the even smaller settlement of Rumford Corner on the left bank. Brown focused his attention on depicting this small agricultural town's primary attraction: the oldest ferry in the area. A heavy rope, anchored by tripods on each bank, guided the ferry operator as he maneuvered his vessel across the glassy river. Built in 1809, this ferry operated continuously until 1955, when it was replaced by a steel bridge.

Rumford Point is located about 75 miles north of Portland, Maine, Brown's birthplace and hometown. Brown began his artistic career by apprenticing to a local firm of house, sign, and ship painters. By the 1860s, he had become a full-fledged artist, exhibiting his landscape paintings at the National Academy of Design and the Boston Athenaeum. During the next two decades from his home base in Maine, he built a successful career, helping to found the Portland Society of Art and exhibiting at the 1876 Centennial Exposition and the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.
