Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. This is a fine collection of 4 hand-built pottery vessels, including a polychrome bowl, jar, a redware vessel, and a blackware gourd-shaped olla! The Nayarit bowl has a planar base and walls that swell outward to a thick rim; the surface painted with a creamy slip with vertical black lines in quadrants on the exterior. The Nayarit redware jar has a rounded but stable base and a flared rim - the ideal size of a drinking cup. The large cylindrical Nayarit vessel has a rounded, stable base, all painted in a warm beige slip with vertical black and red lines across the exterior. The Chupicuaro gourd jar is a remarkable piece of artistry, shaped like the important fruit - the rounded body is modeled with a round base, a pinched hip, a broad neck, and flared rim - a fine representation of the gourds and squash that were invaluable crops for Mesoamerican cultures.
