Description
3rd-1st millennium BC. A mixed group of four stone cylinder seals comprising one jasper and three limestone; two accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (1) 'Cylinder Seal of Cream Stone 11 x 7 mm. The design, which is put between upper and lower rulings, consists of a single eye shape composed of many lines with a vertical band of chevrons as a terminal. This comes from Sumer, the Diyala valley or south-west Iran, and dates to c. 3000 B.C. It is fine work and in very good condition.' (2) 'Cylinder Seal of Black Stone 31.5 x 13 mm. The design shows a horse-drawn chariot with driver in place, and a standing man in short kilt behind. Somthing [sic] not so far identified lies below the horses. This seal comes from north-west Iran and dates to c. 1100-900 B.C. It is nice work, and a rare type, but the seal is very worn.' 33 grams total, 11.5-59mm (1/2 - 2 1/4"). Acquired in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Signo collection, property of a West London businessman. Item number 1001, V-375, W-340, W-483; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
