Fantastic two-page letter describing the "Affair at Travisville, Tennesee," the first Civil War engagement in the state of Tennessee. Unlike most known, written accounts of the affair, this letter was written by a Confederate soldier- Corp. David B. Green of Co. G, 1st Kentucky (Confederate) Cavalry. Describing the early morning surprise attack on the rebel encampment, David wrote his father, "I turned around to pick up my gun, I looked back and saw 3 hundred all [with]in 150 yards of me when one ball passed near my leg. I then run up the hill and was fired at seven times. The balls all struck near me. I got out of course in a hurry. I came back where I could see what they would do and they plundered and left in about three quarters of an hour. Then I went back to the camp and found 2 men dead, 4 wounded, and 25 men & 25 horses prisoners, but only two of our men—the rest was neighbors."
D.B. Green was taken prisoner at the Battle of Fort Donelson in February 1862 and sent to prison at Camp Morton in Indianapolis and held until August 1862. When the term of service expired in October 1862, the regiment was attached to the 8th Kentucky Regiment, but Green's whereabouts after December of 1862 are unknown.
