First Nations Kwakwaka'wakw Wood Sun Mask, V. Morgan
Item Details
Description
Valerie Morgan, (First Nations, Kwakwaka'wakw, Canada, British Columbia, b. 1961 to present) ca. 1992, "Sun Mask." This is a very fine sun mask hand-carved from wood, inlaid with abalone nacre shells, and painted in vibrant hues all in the traditional Kwakwaka'wakw style! From the tips of the 8 rays are lengthy tassels of human hair and leather cords with attached feathers that dangle below the face boss. The visage protruding at the center is anthropomorphic but highly stylized face with pierced nostrils and eyes for the wearer to see through. All is painted in red, black, and teal blue, with rectangular panels of shimmering nacre inlaid around the boss. On the verso, the central head is hollowed out and lined with a leather chin pad for the wearer and the rest of the mask is lined with black felt. Sun masks were used primarily for dances that enacted mythology and origin stories, as the sun symbolizes creation and life. This mask is an exquisite display piece and signed by the artist and dated on the verso. Size: 30" Diameter (76.2 cm)
